Nursing Homes Hot Beds for MRSA Infections

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) infections are becoming more prevalent in hospital settings. Earlier this year, in the March issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the official journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), an article discussed how residents in nursing homes are acquiring MRSA infections. Just as hospitals serve as incubators for infections, nursing homes are also subject to infection. This study reveals the full extent of this national problem.

MRSA is a bacterial staph infection that is resistant to certain antibiotics and most often causes skin infections in the community. In medical facilities, however, MRSA can cause life-threatening surgical-site infections, bloodstream infections and pneumonia. Admission of nursing-home patients after a stay in the hospital provides one explanation for the frequency of MRSA infections in nursing-home environments. Persons with implanted devices, diabetes, weakened immune systems and those who are particularly sedentary and unable to perform activities of daily living have a higher risk of getting MRSA.

In the study published in March 2013 by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, 25 percent of the nursing-home residents in an area in California were found to have MRSA. Yet this infection is not limited to California nursing homes, nor is it a problem without a solution. Nursing homes can take certain precautions by hiring environmental hygiene companies to disinfect their facilities systematically to reduce the chances that their residents will get the infection.
