New DWI law underscores broader accident-related causes, injuries

New legislation that went into effect on July 1 provides for harsher DWI-related penalties in some instances than previously existed in New Mexico. Specifically, the new law brings the potential for a 12-year prison term for any DWI defendant who is convicted of an eighth or subsequent DWI offense.

Although the law obviously highlights drunk driving, readers of our blog know that many factors can contribute to a motor vehicle accident and injuries.

Another person's negligence is often the main cause for a crash and injuries resulting to innocent parties. Yes, some motorists drive drunk, but many others drive recklessly, fail to pay attention, lack experience and are easily distracted. All those things can bring about a motor vehicle crash, with serious -- sometimes disastrous -- consequences.

As we note on the motor vehicle accident page of our website at Giddens & Gatton Law,amp; Jacobus, the injuries that can occur from another person's behind-the-wheel negligence can be many and varied, ranging from brain, back and neck injuries to fractures, burns, amputations and more.

We note on our site that, if you are injured in a motor vehicle accident, "it can be emotionally challenging to overcome the hurdles of filing your claim and getting the benefits you deserve."

Yet doing so can bring an injured victim and his or her family money damages that are critically important for paying medical bills, compensating for lost time at work, helping to cover rehabilitation costs and achieving justice. Our attorneys proudly bring all their experience to bear to help accident accidents obtain meaningful recoveries for the injuries they have suffered.
