The University of New Mexico collected roadway fatality-related data for a recent year, and what the information revealed is unquestionably alarming.
To wit: During 2013, a full 40 percent of all persons killed in traffic accidents in Bernalillo County were pedestrians.
And that is just part of the picture. Federal data issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this year pointed to New Mexico as the state with the highest rate of pedestrian deaths the following year. In 2014, the NHTSA noted, the 74 reported pedestrian fatalities inside the state yielded a death rate for people on foot involved in motor vehicle crashes that was more than twice the rate nationally.
On-point data indicate that, while pedestrian behavior (especially drinking) has been a primary accident-inducing catalyst in recent years, that is far from uniformly being the case. Unsurprisingly, drinking by motorists, along with other negligent driving behaviors, has also been the primary cause of many pedestrian deaths and injuries.
If you have been injured while out walking by a negligent New Mexico driver, or if a wrongful death has occurred in your family for that reason, you might reasonably want to contact a proven personal injury attorney. Experienced legal counsel can provide guidance and strong legal representation geared toward obtaining a meaningful legal recovery for injuries suffered.
