Training requirements beefed up for new semi-truck licenses

A driver's worst nightmare is the thought of a collision with a semi truck. ElPasoProud.com reported about two New Mexico crashes involving big rigs on I-10 in the last month:

  • Near Lordsburg, a semi in windy, dusty conditions hit a car from behind, pushing it into another 18 wheeler and killing two automobile passengers.
  • West of Las Cruces, a tractor trailer was involved in a head-on accident that killed someone in the other vehicle.

While each situation is unique, there are some common contributing factors to the causes of these crashes. Some involve actions or inactions by trucking companies. For example, a trucking company when it hires a driver must ensure that he or she has a valid commercial license and that he or she is properly trained. Inadequate licensing, training, skill, rest, and experience can contribute to truck accidents.

Robust national training standards for truck-driving licenses

To raise the bar, the U.S. Department of Transportation through its Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration of FMCSA developed new, comprehensive national training requirements for how to proceed in the wake of an accident-related injury.
