Driving too fast is a quick way to cause a serious car accident

Everyone who has ever gotten behind the wheel of a motor vehicle of any kind is likely guilty of speeding at some point. Speeding is one of the most common traffic violations in New Mexico, yet people assume that a ticket is the worst consequence for speeding. In reality, speeding dramatically increases the chance that a person will be involved in an accident.

Speeding seems like a victimless crime, up until the moment that it causes a serious accident. If you suffered injuries in a motor vehicle accident collision, there is a good chance that speeding was a cause or increased the severity of the consequences of the accident. Like other types of negligent or reckless driving, it is possible to hold speeding drivers accountable for their actions.

The unrecognized dangers of speeding

Speeding makes driving dangerous for everyone. It is quite tempting to drive faster when running late or behind schedule, but it is never worth the risk. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, speeding is a serious problem, and people could benefit from an increased awareness of its dangers. Some things you may not know about speeding include the following:

  • Estimates suggest that, in the previous two decades, speeding has played a role in one-third of all car accidents.
  • In 2015 alone, almost 10,000 people lost their lives as a result of speeding.
  • External factors, such as severe weather or poorly lit roads, can make speeding even more dangerous.

There are many misconceptions about speeding. Some drivers think that they are not endangering anyone or that driving just slightly over the speed limit is acceptable. In reality, speeding can do the following:

  • Speeding makes it more difficult for a person to come to a complete stop.
  • This behavior makes it more likely that a driver will lose control of his or her vehicle.
  • It can increase the severity of any injuries suffered in a speeding-related crash.

Speeding is an aggressive, inexcusable risk, and if you suffered needlessly because of this action, you could have a rightful claim to financial compensation.

Recompense for accident injuries

You should not have to suffer from the reckless or negligent actions of another person. If speeding played a role in the accident that left you injured, it might be appropriate to seek recompense through a personal injury claim. If you believe you are entitled to financial benefits, you would be wise to take quick action to claim the recovery you deserve.
